A new dimension to my photography passion

Lately I’ve had a little four year old helper on my photography trips! In this photo, little PJ is using my first digital camera, a point-n-shoot I got nearly ten years ago. He’s also wielded my Canon 20D and 7D DSLRs,although they are much more difficult for his little hands to hold.

He’s GOOD, too. So far I haven’t really given him any training other than to show him how to zoom and take the picture. I’m curious to see how he views his world through the viewfinder and am eager to see this perspective totally untainted by outside influence. In time I’ll teach him what I’ve learned about technique, but I do recognize that this kid has natural talent.

I’ve seen photos and video taken by adults with plenty of experience that are off-level, poorly framed, and the like…but PJ frames all his shots nearly perfectly level and has a good sense of perspective. I plan to nurture these talents in him and am beaming with pride to have a little photography buddy to go roaming in the truck with me!

On the hill

This was the sky that greeted us as my little boys and I reached the top of the hill at the University of Mary. I was done with work for the day and took them in the truck to see a sunset. That’s something we haven’t been able to do a lot lately, for a variety of reasons.

While the sky to the north and east was clear, this line of clouds awaited us to the west. It gave us a great display but cut the sunset short as the clouds grew thicker above the horizon. It was still a glorious sight.

Now that the sunset is getting later in the day, I’m able to enjoy this with my little boys. Over winter it occurs before I’m done with work for the day, and in midsummer it occurs way after the little guys need to go to bed. That means we’re now approaching the “sweet spot” of our sunset viewing availability window. I’m so blessed that my little guys like to chase sunsets with Daddy!

Four year old photo

Well, actually I mean four year old photographer. I took one of my little boys out in the truck last Friday to show him the sunset, and we found ourselves near this “falling farm” just west of Mandan Airport.

I took a few shots but he wanted to try as well, and I’d much rather showcase his work as a proud Daddy. My camera is very heavy, so I helped him support the weight, but the framing and actual shot are all his. Naturally, Daddy did the Photoshop processing once we got home. I couldn’t be more proud…maybe little PJ will be a photographer someday!

Valentine’s Day Special: My “Romance Survival Kit”

Any girl will tell you, it’s all about the little things. This is my contribution, a bit of friendly advice for all the fellas out there. One way I try to make my wife’s day a little brighter is with little surprises. Above is the “survival kit” I’ve assembled. Note the heart-shaped Post-It notes, guys. Those are usually found in stores right about now, in time for Valentine’s Day. Go get some!

I like to hide little heart-shaped “I Love You” notes all over the place: inside DVD cases, behind the visor in her truck, things like that. I put a date on each one because sometimes they go undiscovered for long periods of time. That makes the surprise even better!

Phase two was the purchase of little note cards with envelopes and colored stationery, complete with wedding ring postage stamps. From time to time I will write my wife a nice little love-note and mail it to our house. Then, when she gets the mail, she receives a special delivery! A little goes a long way toward making a girl feel special.

We don’t have big plans for Valentine’s Day, although we do have a date night scheduled later this week. My goal is to scatter little miniature Valentine’s days all throughout the year! Give it a try.

When you’re turning 3 and you love Bismarck-Mandan like your daddy

One of my little boys turned three recently. For weeks he’s been saying that he wants to have his birthday at the Capitol. My boys love the Heritage Center and the Capitol as well, and I take them for a visit at every opportunity. So when my youngest turned 3, he got to eat a Kawasaki Green cupcake on the 18th floor. Then we looked out the windows and counted Slugbugs for a bit.

Of course, no birthday would be complete without a trip to the zoo! Yes, it is still open to some degree over the winter. In our case we enjoyed the indoor exhibits. The boys did puzzles and watched the fish and turtles. Much fun was had by all.

I have to laugh when I hear older kids bemoan the idea that “there’s nothing to do.” Wrong. There’s plenty to do in Bismarck-Mandan, all you need is a little initiative. Thankfully that’s something my toddlers have in ample supply.

Boys’ night out

We three dudes decided to head across the river for a sunset bike ride by the blockhouses at Fort Abraham Lincoln. My 2 and 3 year old boys had an absolute blast, and Daddy got to play with the camera a little bit. We couldn’t have asked for e better evening; great weather, no bugs, and the place to ourselves! They pedaled and pedaled, Daddy pointed out various local landmarks out across the way, and it kept us all out of trouble until dark.

TGIF

Several hundred miles, at least one seventeen hour work day, and not a whole lot of rest this week. Thank God it’s Friday. Actually it’s going to be a very busy but rewarding weekend around here. Aren’t they all?

Have a great weekend!

55,000!

I took some time this week to run to the Heritage Center with my little toddlers. First stop: the balcony overlooking the exhibits, where they can hit the button to activate the sound of geese flying overhead. This has been part of the Heritage Center visit tradition since I was a boy.

As this post’s title indicates, this is also my 55,000th photo through my trusty Canon camera! I’ve checked online and seen reports of this model racking up hundreds of thousands of exposures without issue. While I dream of an upgrade, I plan to keep this camera around and in service for years to come. Maybe my boys will learn photography with it!

My boys have the sweetest Mommy ever

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. –Psalm 31:28
I just want to take a minute to brag on my beautiful wife, the sweet Mommy of my two little blond-haired miracles. She’s a selfless, caring girl who I could not live without. I must say that, as we approach a milestone anniversary in our marriage, that I’ve been growing ever closer to her recently…and being a husband and Daddy is the most amazing experience.

She’s really gracious in letting me take off with my camera or hang out in my expansive Garage Majal with the motorcycles and stuff, too.

Finally, some sun

What better opportunity to take my little toddlers outside and let ’em play in the sun and snow? We journeyed downtown to an empty parking lot Saturday to play. We built a snowman, something my Texan wife was unfamiliar with, as well as other snow and toy-related activities. There has been no shortage of snow to play in this winter; however, the temperatures were not very toddler-friendly.

My little three year old is terribly excited to go geocaching this year. He talks all the time about how, when the snow melts and it gets nice out, we get to go geocaching and fishing. The cute part is that he has no idea what geocaching is! It’s just that he gets to go outside and do it with his daddy. That works for me. Think Spring!
