Washington Times catches up with me on Earl Pomeroy’s ties to Big Labor

I’m up to here in filthy Labor Union money!

I’ve been decrying Earl Pomeroy’s indebtedness to big labor unions for longer than I can remember. Just last week I posted about this, so scroll down if you missed it. Labor unions, which represent less than seven percent of North Dakota’s workers, are the majority of Earl Pomeroy’s top career-long contributors. They’re bankrolling a lot of those ads for Earl that are flooding the airwaves lately. And they’re getting what they paid for!

I’m glad to note that finally the mainstream media is picking up on this, most notably this article in the Washington Times. They’re connecting the dots too, and it’s really not that tough once someone starts paying attention. The problem (and reason why North Dakota elects Pomeroy, Conrad, and Dorgan) is that nobody has been paying attention for a long, long time. Times have changed, and they don’t bode well for Earl.

The legislation mentioned in the WT article can be summed up like this:

– First, Labor unions wrangle and cajole benefits from employing businesses like a giant tick bleeding a dog dry. They do whatever they can to force these employers to provide benefits far and above what normal working families receive, and which are in many cases unsustainable.

– Next, when they’re on the verge of bringing the employer to the point of closing up shop and leaving all those union employees to twist in the wind, they go to folks like Earl Pomeroy to write up a government bailout.

– In the end, the business gets screwed, the union hacks get what they want, we taxpayers get the bill, and Democrats get money and rent-a-thugs for their election campaigns.

We’re watching, Earl. We’re doing the math and watching your every move. You’d better start looking for a new job come November. Maybe one with a big, fat labor union benefits package!

North Dakota featured in new movie viral campaign

Thanks to the guys at /film for pointing this out, because it’s actually a pretty cool little “viral marketing” campaign for an upcoming movie. This one just happens to feature North Dakota. It all started with this movie teaser trailer:

At the end of the trailer there’s a flicker of film leader that someone took still images of to get the words “SCARIEST THING I EVER SAW.” From there they decided to visit the website “scariestthingieversaw.com.” On that website was a simulator for a PDP-11, an old mainframe computer like the ones I used to get in trouble on in the 80s. It displayed a timer, and once the timer counted down certain features were enabled. One of those was to print these two images:

When you print them out, they appear to be newspaper pages from the 1940s that have some hidden features. One of the not-so-hidden features is an ad for Rocket Poppeteers, a popsicle-like treat. JJ Abrams is known to put fictitious foods in his movies and mention them by name, but this one’s getting some prominent treatment. (Yes, there’s a rocketpoppeteers.com website, but it doesn’t do anything…yet.) The ad contains a form to mail in to “Become a Rocket Poppeteer and Join the Race to Outer Space!” Where do you send it? Minot, North Dakota.

Naturally, being the curious sort, I filled out one of these forms to see what might happen. So far, nothing has been mailed back to me. No MIBs have showed up at my house, even ones posing as census workers. If that changes, I’ll let you know.

Why does Minot tie into this? Well, the teaser trailer seems to center around Area 51 and UFOs & aliens. UFO believers have reports of UFO activity around United States nuclear weapons facilities going back for decades, so it makes sense that the movie would include a reference to North Dakota…a somewhat remote, maybe even mysterious to some, place with lots of nukes. The X-Files featured an episode where a UFO was hidden in a hollowed-out nuclear missile silo in North Dakota, so why not take the idea to feature film?

Being familiar with central North Dakota, the presence of Air Force bases and nuclear weapons in our great state, and the whole UFO conspiracy theory subculture to a degree, I got a kick out of this viral campaign. While I’m not one of the UFO conspiracy theorists, I find them entertaining to watch. It’ll be interesting to see where and how far this movie takes this campaign and how heavily it features our great state.

Union operative’s letter to GF Herald gets treated like an average reader’s…but who does he represent in ND? NOBODY

My buddy Rob over at the Say Anything Blog pointed out that, while every letter he writes to the Grand Forks Herald comes with a disclaimer that he runs a conservative website and talk show, union shill Ryan Nagle gets special treatment. Here’s a link to the letter, and the image above is a screen capture in case the Herald site gets scrubbed. There’s no disclaimer indicating that he’s an operative for the SEIU labor union, which is likely bankrolling a good chunk of Earl Pomeroy’s doomed reelection campaign (and other Democrats too, I’m sure).

Certainly this comes as no surprise, since ND newspapers like the Herald are nothing more than house organs for the Democrat Party. Rob did a good job of highlighting the double standard, and I had another interesting thought about this: who does this Nagle fella represent? I decided to check the SEIU website to find out:

Apparently the answer is: NOBODY. Here’s a link to their site, with a screen capture shown above. There are no SEIU locals listed for North Dakota. Perhaps they think all that money given to North Dakota Democrats will change that. Maybe they just like having our Congressmen-for-Hire voting for their interests in the national legislative body. In any case, they talk about what’s right for North Dakota and accuse any Republican or conservative opposition of being “out of state interests”, when in reality they don’t speak for ANYBODY here in the great state of North Dakota.

I started this website as a photo blog, and because I love Bismarck-Mandan (and North Dakota in general). However, when wicked thugs like the labor union types and their Thug-in-Chief in the White House make it their mission to threaten my way of life, I’m going to speak out from time to time. I have more fun photos of the nice weather in the Bismarck-Mandan area ready to post as well, but for now I thought I’d take a little time to give you some information that the Grand Forks Herald, the labor union thugs, and the Democrat Party don’t want you to know.

“They’ve gone to plaid!”

When you’ve got a toddler coughing every couple of minutes and went to bed VERY early due to a migraine, then you’ll find yourself up at 4am making quotes from the movie Spaceballs. I’m just sayin’.

I spent a chunk of time indoors this weekend, scanning slides and film negatives before returning our ultra-sweet Canon film & slide scanner to the office. While watching the Class B, I saw a bit of an epic transmission fail (pictured above). When I worked at KFYR I built an edit suite in my home office that blew away the setup I had at the TV station, including a quick “F7” macro to make a screen shot of whatever is piping through my house’s AV system. This is what I got Thursday night.

I only show this screen capture to make a point…no, not about KFYR. It’s about digital. Remember your old analog cell phone? Sometimes it got fuzzy but you could usually make out what was being said on the other end. Now it simply drops out. How about digital TV, if you don’t have cable? Instead of a fuzzy picture, you get gibberish or a frozen frame. Those are the pitfalls of replacing analog with digital.

The western North Dakota NBC stations ditched their analog microwave ICR (Inter City Relay) system a long time ago in favor of fiber optic digital. Well, when something goes wacky there, you can about imagine how much fun it is. No fuzzy image until the problem gets sorted out…no, you get to be a Spaceballs reference. Seeing this on the air made me glad I wasn’t in the truck or the control room for this one 🙂 I’ve had my share of those moments.

I didn’t get to watch the finals because I was working Saturday night, directing the internal feed for the WDA tournament. I haven’t directed anything in a while; I’ve only run cameras or replays this season. It was fun to get the captain’s seat for a little while, especially with camera operators and a replay guy that make the job easy. I like to think I started getting back into the swing of things by the end of the second half of the last game 😉

Mandan 4th of July events featured on Speed Channel, available on iTunes

The folks at KTM Cycle Hutt in Mandan gave the community a treat by inviting Jason Britton of the Speed Channel program “Superbikes” to perform and hang out with the Cycle Hutt gang for July 4th last year. He and his friend Tony rode in the parade, gave multiple shows at Cycle Hutt, trained some local stunters, and took in everything Mandan has to offer on Independence Day. He even tried his hand at bull riding at the rodeo!

I was hired to follow and photograph the craziness, including riding on the parade float. It was an incredible blast, and I’m so grateful to Justin and Tammy for everything they did for me and the rest of the community that weekend. Now you can see how Jason and the Speed Channel crew enjoyed their time in Bismarck-Mandan!

The program is available on iTunes by clicking here or by searching for Super Bikes” in your iTunes browser. It’s $1.99 for the episode. Yeah, my ugly mug appears in there a little bit, but it’s still an entertaining episode.

I still have some image galleries online from the event:

Remember a bridge blowing up or something? Watch it in detail online

A friend of mine was on the Discovery Channel video crew for the show “The Detonators” during the demolition of the old Liberty Memorial Bridge. Their crew followed around the guys in charge of bringing down the old bridge as they sized up the job, rigged their explosives and shaped charges, and pulled the trigger on those big explosions. It may also answer a couple of questions for you as to why they dropped the spans the way they did, and whether things went according to plan.

An excerpt is available here on Discovery Channel’s website.

If you’re like me, you will want to download the full episode for $1.99 on iTunes. Here’s the link (you must have iTunes installed, which is free).

If you have visited this site for a while or watched the news, you may recall that I was the last person to drive across the old bridge before it was closed to the public. The last vehicle to cross the bridge was a motorcycle!

The demolition guys gave me a couple of strips from the shaped charges used to bring down the last part of the bridge. Oh yeah, they’re ranked highly on the list of things in my big souvenir box!

In my conversations with guys from this demolition crew, I found out that they were VERY concerned about wind, something that’s addressed in this episode. For a really neat perspective on the crew that pulled off this impressive feat of demolition, and how they did it, check out the episode! $1.99 is cheap for a souvenir about such a prominent part of Bismarck-Mandan’s history.

Shocker: Bismarck Tribune discovers Kent Conrad is under investigation…after his VIP loan cronies drop it

While ambling through my favorite discount retailer this weekend, the front page of the Bismarck Tribune caught my eye. Actually, it was the headline seen above: “Conrad cleared, scolded”. Amazing…Senator Conrad has been under ethics investigation for months but our ever vigilant sycophant media in this state has refused to investigate it! Any reluctant acknowledgement of the affair, while a rarity indeed, mostly consisting of reprinting a Conrad press release as fact and dutifully moving on.

Apparently the fact that the Democrat-controlled committee in charge of such matters has let him off changes the game. Now instead of having to print that one of their beloved Democrats is under investigation, they can print that he’s no longer under investigation. That’s how “journalism” works in the modern day, folks.

You want to know how difficult it is to research this stuff, that apparently seems to escape the unwilling North Dakota lapdog media? Easy. I did a little poking around, and look how much I found:

These apartment buildings are actually one complex despite different mailing addresses (note the shared driveway). They’re up on Central Avenue, behind Sta-Mart. In one of these apartments “lives” Senator Kent Conrad, and I believe his brother has a place there too. In the other one “lives” Byron Dorgan. I have to put “lives” in quotes for these guys because I too lived in one of these buildings. I never saw either one of them even a single time. You’d know it if your Senator passed you in the hallway.

Each building has a meager mailbox (let’s face it, they’re meager apartments – my appliances were olive green) in the entry way. This composite shows the glamorous mailbox of Sen. Conrad and wife as well as Sen. Dorgan and wife. Do you think that if a US Senator actually lived in a shoebox apartment, he’d have his name hand-written on a crappy stick-on label? That doesn’t exactly seem like “the trappings of office” to me.

While doing some other work in the county recorder’s office, I decided to have a look-see at this piece of property. Among other things, I found this piece of documentation where Senator Conrad sold the building to his LLC for $1 in a quit claim deed. The Senator’s full name is Gaylord Kent Conrad, thus the GKC (and the fact that he goes by “Kent”). Notice that while there are two buildings with separate mailing addresses, it is listed as one parcel of property.

That’s where part of Senator Conrad’s problems occur. Not only does this debacle point out that he and Senator Dorgan have a nifty arrangement to remain North Dakotans on paper cheaply in order to be eligible for re-election, it also points out that he got special treatment from Countrywide, a financial institution under the purview of his Senate committee! In fact, Countrywide was trying to get the federal government to buy up to $400 BILLION in bad loans, something that would certainly require Senator Conrad’s and Dodd’s approval.

An executive from Countrywide has testified under oath that Senators Conrad and Dodd knew that they were getting “VIP” treatment. And it isn’t just about the interest rate. Remember the fact that I pointed out above, that the property looks like two buildings but is one unit? That makes it an eight-plex. Reports I’ve read on the case indicate that Countrywide Financial policy did not allow financing anything over a four-plex. It wasn’t just a matter of getting a lower interest rate, it was getting a mortgage that nobody but a Senator Conrad could have received from Countrywide Financial.

As the yellow journalism of the Bismarck Tribune illustrates, it’s all water under the bridge until election season. The fact that senators Conrad and Dorgan are sort of “inverse carpetbaggers” is even more infurating right now, since they are refusing to meet with North Dakota citizens to discuss government-run health care.

They don’t represent North Dakotans in their residency, they don’t represent North Dakotans in their voting records, and they don’t want to hear from North Dakotans on important issues. And one of them just got let off the hook by New York Senator and committee chairman Edolphus Towns, who also got VIP loans from Countrywide!

In very short order I was just able to connect the dots that are apparently too obfuscated for local newsrooms to send one of their “journalists” to investigate. That proves that the North Dakota media such as the Tribune guys are either too incompetent or too unwilling to actually collect some facts on this case. All they’re willing to do is cheerlead for the guy.

There you go, North Dakota. Keep right on voting for these two jokers. This is the kind of thing you can expect every time you cast a vote for Conrad, Dorgan, or Pomeroy. Hope™! Change™! And while you’re at it, support your local media. That way you can get thrilling stories such as dancing down the aisle at your wedding or quarantined bison from Yellowstone.

Don’t criticize Democrats on KFYR Radio, or you’ll be canned

I’m neither a farmer nor a daily commodities investor, but I’ve enjoyed listening to Gene Graner of Heartland Investor Services on KFYR Radio from time to time. Well, last week he was talking about political forces acting on the markets, and said some things critical of our state’s anointed Democrat congressional delegation. Apparently that isn’t going to fly at KFYR Radio. Here are the comments – click on the bottom of the graphic to play the clip.

My friend Rob at Say Anything and I have been following this since the get-go. He relayed Gene’s details by email:

” Today July 2, 2009 I was silenced by the socialists and removed from the daily shows I do on KFYR radio for the comments I made.

I was told I could continue if I just report on the markets. I said I would report the markets and what affects them, including politics.

I was then thanked by the General Manager, who is a know Obamacrat, for the work I had done but that I was no longer needed.

Friends, I put liberty before wealth, freedom before treasure. If more people would do this, this country would not be were it is at, continuing it deep spiral into extreme socialism.”

Thankfully, Gene told me he was doing the KFYR gig pro bono, so getting taken off the air doesn’t affect his livelihood at the political whim of a Democrat sympathizer who can’t stand criticism of his party.

This is concerning. I mean, it’s obvious that the media is in the tank for Democrats, but it’s getting worse. For instance:

Look at who the Bismarck Tribune is friends with on Facebook… pro-homosexual agenda “civil rights” and pro-Obama groups. They don’t bother hiding it, but why should they? It comes out in their “journalism.”

Around a HALF MILLION acres of private land have now been put under the “management” of a bunch of liberal Democrats who are not elected and hold no official office, but they’ve been loyal to the cause and so their “foundation” will be in charge of coming up with a “plan” for usage of pretty much all the land between Huff Hills and the Knife River Indian Village! The Sierra Club, a group historically hostile toward individual property rights, will now be telling the property owners they loathe what they can do with their land! Have you seen or heard THAT on the news?

How about the fact that Kent Conrad has been under investigation by an ethics committee for MONTHS for being part of, and benefiting from, the mortgage crisis that caused much of our current financial meltdown…yet you have probably not heard one single word about this in the North Dakota media! That means KFYR AM and TV…KXMB…any of them. They’re all complicit in this.

I know people at KFYR radio that I like a lot, some of whom I have worked with and been good friends with for years such as Phil Parker, Jason Hulm, Al Gustin, and Todd Mitchell. I don’t dare ask them if they are limited in what they must or cannot say on the air in either their radio shows or their news reports. I wouldn’t want to put them on the spot. I just fear that they operate under the same caution, that telling the truth about North Dakota politics may mean the end of their career. How would you like to have to work in such an environment? I sure hope that’s not the case for the employees of KFYR (or all of the Clear Channel stations in Bismarck).

I’ve never been more glad that I’m no longer in local broadcasting. I’m not constrained by any such rules. If you vote with your phone or your radio dial, you may consider whether this is a big enough travesty to tune out KFYR and other Clear Channel stations in town. You might also want to email KFYR TV and KXMB and ask them why they don’t have the sack to ask Kent Conrad or Byron “Skybox” Dorgan any tough questions. Why haven’t they mentioned that Earl Pomeroy said he didn’t support Cap and Trade “as it stands” – meaning that he would support it in some form?

Don’t let anybody in this town tell you that they’re a News Leader until they start doing some honest reporting. And if you’re concerned about the haps at KFYR Radio, call them or send them an email. Sure, we are used to this kind of thing on a national level, but there’s no reason why we should have to stand for it locally.
